CASE STUDY

PremP19

PremP109 pear was imported by SVM and plant variety rights and trademark were successfully granted. Test trees were grown on a secure orchard in Anning, Yunnan. Regular evaluations over several years showed good fruit colouration and an excellent flavour profile but some challenges with pollination and disease. SVM recommended an open release commercialisation model to the owner which was accepted. This allows unlimited tree sales from licensed nursery propagators. The nurseries are required to collect a tree royalty and to ensure all growers sign a non-propagation agreement which is held in our proprietary database.

SVM has imported several pollinators to ensure optimal fruit set. We commissioned additional technical work from the breeders at Plant and Food Research in New Zealand to support growing methods. This information will be translated into Chinese and made available to growers free of charge. Field days are provided to advise growers on pollination and other critical growing techniques. A local county in Yunnan was identified as an ideal growing area and SVM has worked with the local extension office to support the development of this variety.

Joy Wing Mau, our strategic marketing partner was provided with fruit samples for market assessment. Market research showed this variety has a niche market position with its unique colouring and highly desirable flavour. But the pear has some challenges to grow successfully and needed ideal climatic conditions and additional technical support to maximize productivity. The pear has been registered for sale and early sales have achieved premium returns to the grower. Trees orders for 1,000,000 trees are being propagated. We expect tree sales of this volume to continue and will be supporting this with regular field days and variety specific technical advice.
